Why Professional Lock Installation Matters
Insurance Compliance
Professionally fitted BS3621 locks satisfy most insurers' requirements. Poorly fitted locks may void your policy.
Correct Fitting
A badly fitted lock can damage your door and compromise security. Our locksmiths ensure precise, reliable installation every time.
Expert Advice
Our locksmiths assess your door and recommend the lock best suited to your security needs and budget. Browse our guide to lock types for more information.
The lock installation process: what to expect
Every fitting follows the same careful routine, whether it is a single deadlock or a full multi-point upgrade. Knowing the steps in advance means there are no surprises on the day and the price is agreed before any tools come out.
- 1
Free assessment
We check your door material, thickness and any existing cut-out, then talk through your insurance and security needs before recommending a lock.
- 2
Recommend the right lock
We match the lock to the door type and the level of protection you want, from a BS3621 mortice deadlock on timber to an anti-snap euro cylinder on a uPVC door. You approve a fixed price first.
- 3
Prepare the door
Where needed we drill a clean cylinder hole or chisel a fresh mortice pocket, working precisely so the door is not weakened or damaged.
- 4
Align the strike plate and keep
We set the strike plate and keep so the bolt throws cleanly and the door closes and locks smoothly, with no forcing.
- 5
Fit and test
The lock is fitted and put through multiple lock and unlock cycles so we know it works reliably before we leave.
- 6
Hand over and tidy up
We hand over your keys, demonstrate how the lock operates and clear away any mess. Most standard fittings are completed in under an hour on the first visit, as our vans carry stock.
What is included with your installation
We quote labour and hardware clearly and separately, so you always know what you are paying for. There is no call-out fee, and the full price is agreed up front before work starts. See the full locksmith price list for current rates.
Included in the labour
- Fitting, adjustment and full testing of the lock
- Basic strike-plate and keep alignment
- Keys supplied with the lock
- Advice on the right lock for your door and insurer
- No call-out fee and a free quote first
Quoted separately
- The lock hardware itself, confirmed before work begins
- Cutting a brand-new mortice pocket from scratch
- Repairing a damaged door or frame before fitting
- Extra carpentry assessed and quoted on the day
Door types we fit locks on
The right lock depends on what your door is made of and how it is built. A mortice lock suits a solid timber door of 44mm or more, while uPVC and composite doors use a euro cylinder and a multi-point mechanism instead. We fit the correct system for each.
Timber and solid wood doors
5-lever BS3621 mortice deadlocks and sashlocks, sized to the door thickness. The proven choice for a final exit door that needs to satisfy your insurer.
uPVC and composite doors
Euro cylinders and multi-point locking mechanisms, with anti-snap upgrades where the existing cylinder is exposed. Full detail on our uPVC locksmith service page.
Aluminium and metal-framed doors
Commercial-grade cylinders and, where appropriate, electromagnetic locks for access-controlled entrances.
French, double and patio doors
Shootbolt and multipoint systems that lock the door into the frame top and bottom for even resistance across the leaf.
Insurance-grade locks and British Standards
Knowing the right standard for your door protects both your home and your insurance cover. Here is what the key marks mean and when they matter. For a deeper explanation, read our guide on what a BS3621 lock is and why insurers require it.
BS3621
The 5-lever mortice deadlock standard most insurers require on final exit doors. Look for the Kitemark stamp on the faceplate. Most policies treat this as a condition of cover, so a non-compliant lock can put a burglary claim at risk.
BS8621
The keyless-egress version, allowing the door to be opened from inside without a key. Used on fire-escape doors, flats and HMOs where safe exit is essential.
PAS 24
An enhanced security performance standard for doors and windows, common on new builds and required under some building regulations.
TS007 3-star and anti-snap cylinders
Protection against lock snapping on uPVC and composite doors. A 3-star cylinder, or a 1-star cylinder paired with 2-star security handles, plus Sold Secure Diamond rated options, resist the snapping attack. Learn more about lock snapping and how to prevent it.
If your policy review has flagged your locks, our guide to lock types sets out which standard applies to each door.
Lock brands and security grades we install
We fit trusted mainstream locks for everyday security and high-security cylinders where anti-snap protection is needed, including Sold Secure and 3-star Diamond rated options.
Mainstream
Yale, ERA, Union, Chubb and Asec for reliable, insurance-grade everyday locking.
High-security cylinders
Ultion, Avocet ABS, Brisant, Mul-T-Lock, ASSA ABLOY and EVVA where anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-bump and anti-drill protection matters.
Smart locks
Yale Conexis, Nuki and Samsung for keyless entry. Compare options in our guide to the best smart locks for UK homes.
Commercial and fire door lock installation
For offices, shops, HMOs and landlord properties, we set up key control to suit the building. Cylinders can be keyed-alike so one key opens several doors, or arranged in a master-key suite where different keys open different combinations of doors.
Fire and escape doors have their own requirements. We fit BS8621 thumbturn locks for keyless egress and BS EN 1125 panic and push-bar hardware so people can always get out safely while the door stays secure from outside. For the full commercial offering, see our commercial locksmith service.
When should you install a new lock?
- You have just moved in. You cannot know who else still holds a key, so it is worth fitting new locks or arranging a lock change on day one.
- An insurance review flagged your locks. If your current lock is not BS3621, we can bring the door up to standard.
- The lock is worn or stiff. A lock that sticks or is becoming unreliable is best replaced before it fails completely and leaves you locked out of the house.
- You are upgrading security. Moving to an anti-snap or smart lock is a common reason to fit new hardware, often as part of a wider home security review.
- After a break-in. We can fit a new lock as part of break-in repair, or come out fast through our emergency locksmith service for same-day work.

What our customers say
Real jobs, real Londoners. A few words from people we have helped.
Fitted a smart lock for me and actually set it up properly with the app rather than leaving me to figure it out. Showed me how to add codes for the family. Patient and clearly knew his stuff.
Wanted a deadbolt added to a side door that always felt flimsy. The locksmith suggested the right one for the door type and fitted it solidly. Feels completely different now. Worth every penny.
Had a new internal lock fitted on my home office door. Neat job, lined up perfectly, and he tidied the frame where the old one had been. Looks like it was always there. Really pleased.
New letterplate and a security chain fitted along with a fresh lock. Quick visit, fair labour charge, and he talked me through keeping it maintained. No complaints at all.
Second time I've used City Locksmith and same good experience both times. On time, polite, knows their trade and charges fairly. Saved their number in my phone now.
Old school service with a modern setup. Booked easily, kept me updated on timing, and did a thorough job. The sort of tradesman you actually want to come back.
Quick to answer, quick to arrive, and the engineer clearly took pride in the job. Explained everything in plain English without talking down to me. Hard to find these days.
